Baybay, baybayin, Binondo, and the Parian: Documents on the Evolution of the Mestizo Sangley

Year: 2022
Type: article
Abstract: This paper seeks to contribute to the growing number of studies on early modern period inter-cultural relations, focusing on Chinese-Filipino-Spanish interactions in the early 1600s and the resulting rise of the mestizo sangley, children of Filipino and Chinese unions. The paper is based on two documents in the Archivo de la Universidad de Santo Tomás (AUST) in Manila, one in the Archivo de la Provincia de los Agustinos Filipinos (APAF) in Valladolid, Spain, and a Spanish-Chinese dictionary in the AUST, all dating from the first half of the 17th century.
