Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of the oral mucosa and periodontal tissue in Erythroxylum coca chewers. It began by examining the oral mucosa by inspection and palpation, followed by the periodontal tissues, for which the WHO periodontal probe was used, the index of Löe and Silness and the Community Periodontal Index. The results of this investigation showed a higher prevalence of pigmentation in the oral mucosa; In the periodontal tissues, using the Löe and Silness index, a higher prevalence of moderate inflammation was found, with the group of inhabitants who were 5 -10 years old being more prevalent; in the Community Periodontal Index, a higher prevalence of bleeding, presence of supragingivial or subgingival calculus was observed. Concluding: The characteristics that were observed in the oral mucosa were melanin pigmentation (75,4%), canker sores (24,6%), leukoplakia (3,1%); in the case of periodontal tissue, moderate inflammation was observed in the Loe and Sillnes index (87,7%), in the CPI a higher prevalence of supragingival and subgingival calculus (49,2%) and bleeding on probing (38,5%) were observed.
