Fine metalworking tools and workshops in Western and Northern Europe – a diachronic consideration
Year: 2019
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: This paper deals with late prehistoric fine metalworking tools and workshops in Western and Northern Europe. From the beginning of metallurgy in the third Millennium BC up to the end of the Iron Age in the first centuries BC, tools and manufacturing techniques for gold and silver develop with ongoing technological improvement. An interdisciplinary approach to fine metalworking tools combining archaeology, ethnoarchaeology, experimental archaeology, iconography, and ancient written sources with archaeometry is demonstrated. Case studies illustrate specialised tools and their handling as well as the raw materials they are made of.
