Abstract: Almost half (42%) of adults aged ≥65 in the US take five or more medications (defined as polypharmacy), 1 which can lead to considerable financial burden on patients and their families. In 2017, 29% of Medicare beneficiaries who had ≥3 chronic conditions spent more than 20% of their income on medical care. 2 When medications are unaffordable, patients may need to choose between their medications and other essentials, such as food, rent, or gas. 3 Patients struggling to afford their care might skip doses or abandon their medications
