Abstract: What are the social characteristics of metal music fans? Even if spontaneous opinions on this subject are widespread, the fact remains that quantitative surveys on the social origins and characteristics of metal music fans are few and far between. Yet it would seem that the images associated with metal are vivid enough that elements that seem logical may sometimes hastily be taken as proven results. After presenting the data generated by an extensive quantitative survey on those people attending an event related to metal culture in France, we can compare it with the questions often raised in studies of metal music—but rarely answered due to a lack of sufficiently reliable empirical data.
