Socially Useful Production
Year: 2016
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: In January 1976 workers at Lucas Aerospace in the UK published an Alternative Corporate Plan for the future of the company. This was an innovative response to management announcements that thousands of jobs were to be cut in the face of industrial restructuring, international competition and technological change in design and manufacturing. Instead of redundancy, the workers argued their right to socially useful production, and in so doing spawned a grassroots movement.
