Abstract: In everyday life, we face situations that might make us feel angry, sad, frustrated, or scared. It is normal to feel badly sometimes, and usually these feelings go away with time. We can also use various strategies to make ourselves feel better in upsetting situations. In this article, we summarize some of the strategies that people can use when faced with tough situations, and how systems in the brain work together to allow us to use these strategies in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.
