Cardiovascular Risk Assessment in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Year: 2022
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Background: It is well known that unregulated type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular incidents. Early risk assessment, specially for coronary artery disease, is important to initiate therapeutic strategies to reduce ardiovascular risk. Objective: To examine the cardiovascular risk in patients with diabetes mellitus in relation to age, sex, disease duration, glucoregulation and applied therapy. Methods: A study involving 64 patients divided into appropriate groups according to age, sex, disease duration, glucoregulation, and applied therapy. Cardiovascular risk was calculated using the SCORE table for cardiovascular risk assessment. Results: Examining the cardiovascular risk in patients with diabetes mellitus, it was found that cardiovascular risk increases with age (rho = 0.458; p = 0.0001; p <0.05) and is higher in men (rho = -0.417; p <0,0001). A statistically significant positive weak correlation (rho = 0.266; p = 0.032) of cardiovascular risk with the duration of diabetes mellitus was found, ie patients with a longer duration of diabetes mellitus have a higher cardiovascular risk. lucoregulation showed a small, statistically insignificant negative correlation with cardiovascular risk in the sense that patients with better glucoregulation had a slightly lower cardiovascular risk. No statistically significant correlation was observed between applied therapy and cardiovascular risk. Conclusion: The results indicate the need for close monitoring of patients with diabetes mellitus as well as better glucoregulation in order to reduce cardiovascular risk in these patients.
