Social Work’s Contribution towards an Eco-Social World; the People’s Charter

Abstract: In the beginning of our tenure as journal editors we made a pledge that we would place a particular emphasis on the importance of social and environmental justice. In addition, we explained that a key objective of the journal would be to highlight the centrality and relevance of social work scholarship and practice in promoting social change and engaging with transformative action. We have tried to honour such pledge in multiple ways: a) we have taken steps to create a genuinely inclusive editorial board b) we ensured that people with lived experience are central to this process c) we highlighted that research evidence can and should be used as a way of speaking truth to power. Nurturing and sustaining an environment where scholarship, practice and activism are not seen as mutually exclusive requires a common vision; or at least a genuine commitment to co-create and co-imagine such vision. In the latter part of our tenure, we would like to encourage authors, board members and the broader social work community to share ideas and suggestions about how a common vision based on social and environmental justice can be shaped. Importantly, we would also like to encourage discussions and research on what the social work role would be in articulating a vision that addresses the current structural crises facing our societies, in a meaningful and transformative way.
