Abstract: We thank Kroenke and Cheville for their thoughtful letter and appreciate their endorsement of our study and findings. We agree with them that, in our study, patient reporting of symptoms was not the sole driver of improved clinical outcomes. As we describe in the article, our intervention was a composite that also included automated e-mail alerts to clinicians for severe or worsening patient-reported symptoms and printed symptom reports at visits. Symptom monitoring via this approach is likely part of a complex cascade of events including clinician actions that ultimately leads to improved downstream patient outcomes. Indeed, we found that nurses responded to e-mail alerts with clinical actions 77% of the time.
