Abstract: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a term denoting a pathological decrease in the rate of fetal growth. The most frequent cause of late fetal growth restriction is uteroplacental dysfunction, which arises because of an insufficient supply of nutrients and oxygen to maintain normal aerobic fetal growth. However, in symmetric FGR, fetal chromosomal abnormalities, developmental anomalies and intrauterine infections should be completely excluded. As a consequence of inadequate adaptation of the uteroplacental vessels during endovascular trophoblastic invasion, vascular resistance increases and the blood flow to the placenta in the choriodecidual area decreases.
