Abstract: This paper investigates the possible origins and early development of carinated bowls, or so-called Meydum bowls, which are considered chronological markers of late Early Dynastic and Old Kingdom material culture. Early archaeological examples dating between late Naqada III and early Dynasty 4 from a range of well-dated sites along the Nile Valley between the Delta and the 1st Nile cataract will be examined regarding their morphology, material properties and manufacturing techniques. Also, the possible modes of production allowing for insights into the geographic and material diversity of this important group of artefacts will be considered before conclusions about the regional development and relative chronology of this important category of ceramic vessels will be attempted.
