La secuencia cronológica de Punta Patache y la ocupación de la costa arreica del Desierto de Atacama (21ºS)

Year: 2022
Type: article
Abstract: This article presents the results of the archaeological characterization of Punta Patache in Chile’s Tarapaca region, which is composed of 18 shell middens and a cemetery. It discusses the changes the maritime fisher-hunter-gatherer groups sustained and the population dynamics between the Middle Archaic period and late prehistory (7470 and 670 cal BP). This occupational sequence begins with the residential camps associated with shell fishhooks in the Middle Archaic period, followed by a significant gap of ca. 1800 years. During the Late Archaic and Early Formative periods, the number of campsites showing persistent and intermittent occupation increased. As the occupation of the Rheic coast consolidated and intensified in the Late Formative and Late Intermediate periods, the number of population centers increased.
