Supporting participants and study partners when trials end as planned

Year: 2022
Type: article
Abstract: Supporting participants and study partners when trials end as planned Many people -including those living with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), their care partners, and those who are interested in their well-being -welcomed the recent news of a positive Phase 3 clinical trial in mild cognitive impairment due to AD and mild AD.While we eagerly await the release of the detailed study data in a peer-reviewed publication and formal presentation at a scientific meeting, we urge the research community to prioritize supporting research participants and their study partners.Earlier this year, the multidisciplinary Participant Follow-Up Improvement in Research Studies and Trials (Participant FIRST) work group published 17 recommendations -spanning the pre-, mid-, and post-trial periods -outlining how best to communicate with and support participants and study partners when trials end early.1These recommendations focus on prospectively allocating sufficient resources for orderly study closeout; developing dyad-centered communication plans; helping dyads build and maintain support networks; and rapid sharing of information. 1 Although the impetus for these rec-interest.
