Abstract: This article deals with the problem of reforming Jewish education in the Russian Empire in the first half of the 19th century. It is noted that for a long time the Jewish community in Russia maintained the traditional education system. The attempt to destroy the traditional Jewish school provoked opposition from Jews. It is noted that the reform of Jewish education laid the foundation for the development of secular education, contributed to the teaching staff establishment.
