Abstract: NR2A (F¼6.034,p<0.05),NR2B (F¼5,588, p<0.05) and vGluT1 (F¼14.103,p<0.01).Significant increase of all investigated proteins, compared to control was detected (NR1, NR2A, NR2B p<0.05; vGluT1 p<0.01).Conclusion: GABAergic and glutamatergic neurotransmission is crucial for neuronal excitability, integrity and synaptic plasticity. Our results suggest that repeated administration of zaleplon at a lower dose significantly increases protein expression of NR1, NR2A, NR2B and vGluT1.These results, together with our previous findings show that a repeated lower dose of zaleplon increases protein expression of GABAAα receptor subunit and GABA transporter level, indicating marked GABA and glutamate signalling in the hippocampus.Given the importance of GABA/glutamate balance the effects of zaleplon play an important role in maintaining GABA/glutamate balance.
