Abstract: The prevalence of calcific aortic stenosis has been increasing due to the aging population. Three types of aortic valve diseases cause aortic stenosis: degenerative tricuspid valve aortic stenosis, congenitally abnormal aortic valve (i.e. bicuspid and unicuspid valves), and rheumatic valve aortic stenosis. Understanding the underlying pathology of aortic stenosis is important to treat patients with aortic stenosis with transcatheter or surgical aortic valve replacement, as well as to seek effective medical treatment, because thus far there is a lack of convincing pharmacological treatment. In this chapter, we will summarize the histopathology and pathophysiology of aortic valve diseases.
