Abstract: Traditional surgery mainly relies on the surgeons empirical judgment on the color and shape of different tissues to determine the extent of resection. However, the lack of objective evaluation standards, the limited experience of doctors, and the color differences of individual patient tissues often lead to either a high rate of positive margin or unnecessary intraoperative damage to the nerves, blood vessels, ureters, and bile ducts. Color-coded fluorescence imaging has been developed in order to enhance the visual difference between tissues and provide objective criteria to identify different tissues (based on tissue structure or pathology). This has led to its increasing impact on surgical care. In this chapter, the history and basics of fluorescence image-guided surgery have been introduced, and the typical fluorescence imaging-guided surgeries have been summarized.
