Exploring the Use of Actualistic Forensic Taphonomy in the Study of (Forensic) Archaeological Human Burials

Year: 2022
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: The recovery of buried human remains from both forensic and archaeological contexts involves careful excavation with the aim of securing as much evidence as possible pertaining to the circumstances surrounding the death and burial of the deceased individual(s). Understanding 543the formation processes of human burials and distinguishing the effects of human modification of the remains and their surroundings from taphonomic processes is key to reconstructing the sequence of events leading up to death and burial. This requires careful consideration of the effects of taphonomic processes on the depositional environment and the remains.
