Abstract: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is undergoing a paradigm shift: from clumsy single-coil TMS devices to sophisticated multi-coil TMS (mTMS) systems, from brain-state-independent to state-dependent stimulation, and from open-loop to closed-loop operation.Instead of stimulating just one cortical location in a predefined non-personalized and fixed sequence, we can activate brain networks using personalized multi-locus sequences and effectively control their activity. We have used our multilocus TMS system in closed-loop EEG-and EMG-controlled paradigms, in which stimuli are directed to optimal cortical loci by superimposing the induced E-fields of the different coils. This has provided us a great flexibility to implement spatiotemporal TMS sequences in which different loci can be stimulated at arbitrary inter-pulse intervals.
