Mixed depositional processes in coastal to shelf environments: Towards acknowledging their complexity

Year: 2023
Type: article
Abstract: The intricate development of coastal to shelf environments and their deposits is dominantly driven by the interplay of river, wave and tide hydrodynamic processes. These processes are, in turn, impacted by several additional factors including aeolian processes, contour currents, seasonal ice cover, the nature and mechanical characteristics of the substrate, confinement and physiography of the basin, climate oscillation and relative sea-level fluctuations. Consequently, the depositional record of these mixed-process interactions is complex and challenging to decipher. Because coastal and shallow-marine areas around the world are densely populated and subject to intense and increasing natural and anthropogenic stresses, a better understanding of these depositional systems will benefit their sustainable protection and development. In this special issue, contributors present their newest research on mixed-energy depositional processes and how they control the dynamics and sedimentary record of coastal to shelf environments.
