Profile prediction for ultrasonic vibration polishing of alumina ceramics

Abstract: Ultrasonic-assisted polishing methods are widely used for the precision processing of hard and brittle materials such as glass and ceramics with excellent polishing performance. Most research has been focused on basic removal mechanisms of ultrasonic-assisted polished materials. As there are only a few studies have on comprehensive material removal mechanisms in ultrasonic polishing tools. Most researchers have studied the profile of surfaces after conventional mechanical polishing, but less research has been done on the profile of faces after axial ultrasound assisted polishing. This paper proposes a new method for predicting the polishing force which is critical for geometrical accuracy and surface finish. A material removal model was developed for axial ultrasonic-assisted polishing of a spherical polishing head at different tilt angles, and the model can predict the surface profile for multiple trajectories. The experimental study of multiple trajectories polishing of alumina ceramics showed a good correlation between the experimental and simulated surface profile data, verifying the correctness of the profile prediction model. A better combination of ultrasonic polishing process parameters was obtained by the gray correlation analysis. The obtained results can be used for precision trimming of local areas of polished workpieces, polishing head multi-position multi-parameter ultrasonic polishing, and surface ultrasonic polishing trajectory planning.
