Abstract: Research at the nanoscale has progressed in the past few decades and produced advanced technologies in various fields.From computation and data storage to energy and optics, the research dramatically shifted to utilizing new properties found in nanomaterials.Moreover, with the increased throughput from advanced fabrication and characterization tools, the research will continue to produce amazing results.In this chapter, the concepts of phase change thin films and their application in data storage and nanophotonics are introduced.Furthermore, unconventional or novel phase change thin films produced and characterized in this thesis work are also briefly introduced.Finally, the motivation and aim of the research work done and the outline of the contents of the thesis are given.1 Image: the orbital path of Dimorphos was shortened by 32 minutes after a collision with the DART spacecraft.
