Koro-like manifestations of panic disorder
Year: 2023
Type: article
Abstract: Koro is a rare psychogenic syndrome characterised by a belief that one's genitals are retracting into the abdomen.Owing to the fear of resultant death, the patient falls into a state of panic.[1] Since the Koro epidemic began in Singapore in 1967, [2] there has been little to no mention of the condition in our region, possibly due to the increased level of education and sophistication of the population over the years. At that time, cases of Koro in Singapore were seen primarily among young adults who were Chinese, male and had primary to secondary school level education.[2] It was thought to be an acute hysterical panic reaction brought on by an 'auto-or hetero-suggestion' (typically in the form of a rumour) and conditioning by various elements of Chinese cultural backgrounds, which, among others, included links between the retraction of the penis and fatality in Chinese literature.
