Abstract: According to the 2020 World Health Organization guidelines, physical activity (PA) is defined as “any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure”. In terms of mode, there are four PA domains: occupational, domestic, transportation/utilitarian, and leisure time. PA is further classified as structured or incidental. The result of participating in PA or exercise is the expenditure of energy, which is commonly quantified in terms of intensity. There are several methods to quantify PA intensity : energy expenditure as a result of PA, metabolic equivalents, oxygen consumption, heart rate, heart rate reserve, and specifying a percentage of oxygen uptake reserve. Exercise duration is inversely related to intensity of the activity and, therefore, intensity and duration can interact to produce the desired results. Exercise volume is the byproduct of all exercise components. That is, exercise volume is the outcome of: exercise intensity, exercise duration, and frequency.
