Abstract: Kidney disorders can develop suddenly (acute) or over a long period (chronic). Acute kidney injury is the sudden loss of kidney function over a period of hours or days. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the gradual loss of kidney function over a period of years or even decades, usually caused by a long-term medical condition and aggravated by risk factors. CKD is a global health burden with a high economic cost to health systems. The most common causes of CKD are diabetes mellitus and hypertension, which are responsible for up to two-thirds of the cases. Given the complex nature and complications of CKD, optimal disease management is best accomplished through a collaboration between different medical specialties in the context of a multidisciplinary team. Nutritional therapy in CKD is of high importance.
