The Healthcare Provider Burden Scale: Short Form

Year: 2023
Type: article
Abstract: Dear Editor: Physicians, nurses, and other health care providers have long described the treatment of people with chronic pain (PwCP) as challenging. Factors such as the frequent paucity of confirmatory medical evidence,1 the need to devote time to medical management rather than a “cure” (an issue greatly complicated by the ongoing opioid crisis),2 and comorbid psychosocial issues3 make the treatment of chronic pain conditions challenging. The Healthcare Provider Burden Scale (HPBS), an 8-item measure with strong psychometric properties, was developed to assess the burden that clinicians expect/perceive in treating PwCP.4 Although initial HPBS data confirm that clinicians view such treatment as quite burdensome,5 the length of the scale can make its use cumbersome in actual practice. Hence, to facilitate its clinical and research applications, we used data from previous studies5–7 to identify a brief set of HPBS items that combined the robust psychometrics of the original with the added benefit of brevity.
