Abstract: This essay unravels the political-economies of caste and tracks the constitution of ritual power within such formations. It does this by focusing on a particular community, the Satnamis of central India. Based on official sources and fileldwork materials, the essay covers over a hundred years of history. Here my efforts equally serve to rethink the pasts of a subaltern community as part of a wider dynamic between the political-economy and the cultural construction of caste, a dynamic ever embedded in the interplay between meaning and power.
