Preventable anesthetic deaths are not the major perioperative problem

Year: 2023
Type: article
Abstract: The discovery of anesthesia in 1846 transformed medical practice. Although anesthesia-related mortality was initially high, major advances in drug safety and improved equipment reduced mortality more than 100-fold over the last century. Anesthesia machines have evolved to the point where several simultaneous mistakes are required to provoke patient harm. Enhanced monitoring, especially of oxygen saturation and expired PCO2, also played a crucial role in promoting patient safety. Anesthesia training is now considerably stronger than just a few decades ago.
