Improving the value of letters in biomedicine

Abstract: The letter is a unique and versatile literary format in the published biomedical literature. Here we argue for more inclusive editorial practices to encourage authors to publish more of them. At the same time, we offer an appreciation of the complementarity of letters to commentaries, and how the strengths of one paper type could make up for the weaknesses of the other.
