Year: 2023
Type: article
Abstract: After the pandemic, the visibility of rural schools has become clear, as they are considered a core element for the territory, which guarantee the population settlement. Some mass media have paid attention to the rural schools’ requests, highlighting the advantages of this educational model and reporting problems such as depopulation, which leads them to extinction. This study identifies the milestones, approaches and topics prioritised in 100 newspaper articles published between 2020-2021 in the digital press of the Spanish Autonomous Communities with most population schooling in rural areas (15-25%). The methodology is mixed, focused on content analysis, followed by the statistical treatment of data. The results prove the interest aroused by rural schools in the diaries of the autonomous communities studied, especially in the local arena. The testimonies of the members of the educational and local community draw attention to the facts that empower rural schools -innovatives methodologies and projects, a desirable ratio and families involvement-, and mentioning the advantages of the natural and privileged enclave. They also report schools closures and limitations: digital divide, low connectivity and lack of transport and teachers, taking on the role of voicing these demands, and calling for mesures to the policy-makers.
