Continuité sémantique ou dégroupement homonymique entre tests diachroniques et tests synchroniques
Year: 2023
Type: article
Abstract: In the study of semantic change, the issue of semantic continuity is often overlooked or is taken for granted, and indications as to whether diachronic homonymic degrouping takes place or not as the result of semantic change ar not provided. The article introduces two diachronic and synchronic tests in order to answer that question, one test dealing primarily with shared morphemic presuppositions and the other with stable interpretative profiles. The techniques which are used, namely the analysis of the conditions of use of signs and the inversion of etymological dictionaries, are described and illustrated, mainly by the study of the tantus family, i.e. the diachronic set of lexemes that includes the French morpheme /tant/ in bound and free uses.
