Abstract: Studies over the past two decades have provided an insight into the population distributions for acute and chronic pancreatitis. Estimates are also available on the risk of recurrences and chronic pancreatitis, and the clinical factors that determine disease progression. After the first attack, readmission to hospital is frequent, about 1 in 5 patients develop recurrent acute pancreatitis, and 1 in 10 progresses to chronic pancreatitis. Alcohol, tobacco abuse, and recurrent acute pancreatitis are the main predictors of disease progression. Acute pancreatitis, especially severe, and chronic pancreatitis significantly decrease quality of life when compared with the general population. Abdominal pain is the main symptom of chronic pancreatitis, and a significant fraction of these patients develop exocrine and/or endocrine insufficiency during their disease course. The risk of pancreatic cancer is increased several folds in chronic pancreatitis, but the absolute risk of this is low.
