Abstract: The past decade has seen major advances in our understanding of intestinal stem cell biology. Among the most important conceptual breakthroughs is the observation that, after injury, depleted Lgr5+ stem cells can be rapidly replaced by more mature cells in the crypt.1 Interestingly, lineage tracing studies have suggested that multiple cell types have this capacity, which has been variously (and confusingly) termed reversion, paligenosis, dedifferentiation/transdifferentiation, facultative/reserve stem cell activation, and so on.
