Abstract: Maternal RSV vaccine approved in USJust two months after the first RSV vaccines received green light for use in older adults, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved one of the vaccines, RSVpreF (Abrysvo, Pfizer), for protection of infants by maternal immunization. The vaccine can be administered to expectant mothers in week 32-36 of gestation and should protect newborns until age 6 months.FDA's decision is based on Phase 3 data showing 82% efficacy in preventing severe lower respiratory infection in infants within 90 days after birth. 1 Another RSV vaccine candidate, the VLP vaccine IVX-121 (Icosavax), showed durable immunogenicity at the one-year point: ~50% and ~70% neutralizing antibody titers to RSV-A and RSV-B strains, respectively, compared to 1 month postvaccination.RSV is one of the major causes of pneumonia in children and older adults. It accounts for 60,000 deaths worldwide in small children annually.
