OP33.09: Correlation between congenital heart defects in fetuses and placental pathologies

Year: 2016
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: Retrospective analyse of the relationship between fetal congenital heart disease and placental pathological lesions. In this study, induced labor was performed in 54 fetuses in Beijing Anzhen Hospital from August 2010 to April 2014. Subjects were divided into 2 groups, 20 subjects with congenital heart defects (CHD) as study group; and 34 with no CHD as control group. Pathological study of the placentas in both groups showed that 18 cases (18 of 20, 90%) in the study group were found with various degree of placental lesions (0 with mild chorionic villi, 14 with severe chorionic villi, 8 with focal calcification, and 3 with thrombosis); compared with much milder pathologies in 34 (34 of 34, 100%) in the control group (21 cases mild chorionic villi, 9 cases severe chorionic villi, 27 cases focal calcification, and 0 case thrombosis) (P < 0.05). CHD is associated with more severe placental pathological lesions compared with control group, which may provide mechanistic insight into the effects of CHD on the growth, development and well-being of these fetuses.
