Abstract: Minimally invasive thermal treatments (TTs) have emerged as a popular strategy to ablate tumors. The prediction of TTs effects remains an open challenge with a consequent risk of high recurrences and incomplete tumor removal. Despite the mechanisms of tumoral tissue damage by TTs are not completely clear, most authors agree that the TTs effects are strongly related to the temperature experienced by the cells and the exposure time. Therefore, the real-time knowledge of tissue temperature during TTs may be used to guide the clinicians in the optimization of the TTs settings, thus for enhancing clinical outcomes. Here, we present computed tomography (CT)-based thermometry, a technique leveraging the sensitivity of some tissue physical properties on temperature. This contribution examines the principle of work of CT thermometry, its application in TTs, and the development of recent solutions to estimate tissue temperatures by this technique.
