Abstract: In Reply We agree with Dr Hsu and colleagues that in patients with COPD, comorbidities are a potential confounder of the association between mucus plugs, as measured on CT, and all-cause mortality. To address this concern, in our study, 1 we created a comorbidity count consisting of a number of health conditions, including hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure, stroke, diabetes, high cholesterol, and cancer (ie, lung cancer, colon cancer, bladder cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer). This ordinal count was added to the adjusted model described in Table 2 of our article.1 The results showed that the association between mucus plugs and all-cause mortality was still present (mucus plug score 1-2 vs 0: adjusted hazard ratio, 1.15 [95% CI, 1.02-1.29];mucus plug score ≥3 vs 0: adjusted hazard ratio, 1.27 [95% CI, 1.12-1.44]).
