Abstract: We report a correction to our original article. In Eqs.(S67)-(S69) in the Supplemental Material (SM), we neglected to include the term ασ e zz in the expression for Ft,C z,OB and F b,C z,OB .This omission propagated into the quantities plotted and reported in Fig. 8(d) of the main text, impacting our discussion of Fig. 8(d) in the three paragraphs following the figure, namely the paragraphs starting with "When we calculate," "Our results show," and "The perivitelline space."Notably, our key result in Fig. 8 (Sec.IV B) remains true in that forces from the fluid layer provide a large portion of the downward force that would cause epithelial invagination. It remains true that as H is increased towards ∞ in Fig. 8(d), the downward forces from the fluid layer are significantly diminished. However, with the corrected term in Eqs.(S67)-(S69), we have that, for the parameters and shape of the apical constriction force chosen in Fig. 8(d), the total z-directional force is reduced in magnitude, becoming less negative, rather than transitioning to positive as previously stated.Hence our statements regarding Fig. 8(d) in the paragraph starting "When we calculate" should be "if we take the limit H → ∞, then we see that the z force exerted on the tissue's top surface is negative but significantly reduced (by approximately 20×)," and "the magnitude of the force in the case H = 0.5 may cause significant downward deformation, while the magnitude of the force in the case H → ∞ may not."Additionally, the last phrase of the same paragraph should read "there exists a continuum of forces and potentially different physical results tuned by the parameters of the surrounding fluids and boundary geometry."The corrected term in Eqs.(S67)-(S69), in effect, gives a larger parameter space for apical constriction forces at the cellular level to produce invagination.Another replacement to the text is in the paragraph starting "Our results show," in reference to Fig. S8.The second to last sentence should read: "[...] Fig. S8, in which as the viscosity of the fluid layer η L is decreased, the fluid layer pushes less strongly into the tissue, and the resultant z force is decreased."With the corrected term in Eqs.(S67)-(S69), we still obtain instances of the z-directional force exerted on the tissue's top surface transitioning from negative (downward pointing) to positive (upward pointing) in simulations. This is demonstrated in Fig. S9 in the SM, discussed in the paragraph starting "The perivitelline space," in which we apply a wider profile of the constricting force compared to the one applied in Fig. 8(d).This discussion remains similar to previously stated, as Fig. S9 FIG. 8. Corrected Fig. 8(d) of main text.Simulation of apical constriction.(d) The z-directional force F z (y = 0 slice) on the tissue's top and bottom surface for various thicknesses of the fluid layer H .
