Abstract: independent of the adaptation state; this conclusion, in turn, implies metamer invariance.Von Kries (1905) derived from this assumption, which he called "der Koeffizientensatz" (commonly referred to as the "law of coefficients"), some testable linearity properties for asymmetric color matching, analogous to the additivity and proportionality laws for symmetric color matching. If A, B, C, and D represent color stimuli, t represents removal or introduction of a neutral filter, + represents additive color mixture, s signifies a metameric match, and 1 and 2 designate different states of adaptation, then the predictions from von Kries1 assumption are : If Ai z Bg , Ci = Dg then tAi= tB2 and (A+C)i= (B+D)2 These properties are typically investigated by the method of interocular matching and have not been found to hold in the general case (Walters, 1942; Wright, 1947; Hunt, 1957; Wyszecki 6 Stiles, 1967).Another test of the von Kries "law of coeffi cients " has been carried out by MacAdam (1956), using a binocular matching technique. If one transforms the obtained spectral color-matching curves to the fundamental response curves, then the resulting tristimulus values can be taken as the fundamental responses. The prediction then is that the ratio of
