Static respiratory mechanics are unaltered in males and females with obesity

Abstract: The potential influence of obesity on the interrelationships between maximal expiratory flow, lung volume, and static lung elastic recoil pressure is unclear. These data show that the presence of obesity does not alter the relationship of flow and pressure across the mid-expiratory range in males and females. In addition, independent of obesity, females have smaller lungs and greater upstream flow resistance, which contributes to reduced maximal flow, when compared with males.
