Mu-opioid Receptor Antagonism Potentiates the Anxiolytic-like Effects of Oxytocin in Mice

Abstract: Anxiety disorders are leading causes of disability worldwide and are major contributors to the global burden of diseases. In the United States alone, over 64 million adults are diagnosed with one or both disorders. Recent finding by our research team and others have demonstrated that centrally administered oxytocin ameliorates anxiety- and depression-like behavior in male and female mice. Additionally, these studies report important sex differences, such that centrally administered oxytocin is more effective in males compared to females.
