Clonidine Inhibits Oxycodone-motivated Behaviors, Brain Stimulation Reward and Potentiates the Antinociceptive Effects of Oxycodone in Rodents

Year: 2023
Type: article
Abstract: Clonidine, an alpha-2 noradrenergic receptor agonist, is well known to play a crucial role in preventing stress-induced relapse to heroin and psychostimulants in laboratory animals and is frequently used to treat acute opioid withdrawal syndromes at clinic. The role of clonidine in oxycodone reward has not been explored preclinically. We show in the present study that pretreatment with clonidine (0-50 µg/kg, i.p.) dose-dependently reduces oxycodone self-administration tested under either 0.1 or 0.025 mg/kg/infusion.
