Oligodendrocytes as a Critical Cell-type in Parkinson's Disease

Year: 2023
Type: article
Abstract: Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder and the fastest-growing neurodegenerative disease. A core feature of this disease is the loss of dopamine signaling in the striatal region of the brain. Although some of the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms have been described, PD pathology is not fully understood, and we still lack the insight that allows for the development of efficient therapies beyond dopamine replacement. Oligodendrocytes (OLs) are the myelinating cells of the central nervous system (CNS), producing multi-layered myelin sheaths around neuronal axons originating from Oligodendrocytes Precursor Cells (OPCs).
