Mesenchymal Stem Cell-derived Secretome: a Novel Biopharmaceutical Approach Prevents the Long-term Metabolic Insult Elicited by Perinatal Asphyxia
Year: 2023
Type: article
Abstract: Perinatal asphyxia (PA) constitutes a leading cause of neonatal death, while the surviving children develop motor and cognitive deficits, for which no preventive treatments are available. A new approach is reported. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) secrete a broad array of proteins, regulatory miRNAs, and bioactive factors, with remarkable antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and repairing features. Pre-incubation of MSCs with pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α+IFN-γ) or deferoxamine (DFX, a hypoxia-mimetic greatly improves the protective effect of the secretome.
