Abstract: The maintenance of a proper mitochondrial function and metabolic balance in neural cells is crucial to define cell viability in the central nervous system (1). Sharing of whole, functional mitochondria among neural cells may therefore represent a novel mechanism of metabolic reconfiguration so far overlooked. Accordingly, the intercellular transfer of organelles has proved to physiologically occur in neural cells to define cell survival (2-3). Being mitochondrial content and function key in metabolic and redox regulation (3-4) that control neural cell fate (3,5), the incorporation of exogenous organelles must be strictly regulated.
