Probing the Long-term Consequences of Sars-cov-2 Infection on Brain Health in Patients With and Without a History of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
Year: 2023
Type: article
Abstract: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a major public health issue worldwide and a subset of patients experience persistent neurological and/or psychological symptoms that last for months to years. Sustained inflammation following mTBI is thought to contribute to impaired astrocyte function, neuronal degeneration, and blood-brain barrier damage which may leave the brain vulnerable to further injury or infection. COVID-19 is known to lead to chronic neurological and/or psychiatric complications (i.e., neurological long COVID) and may cause similar deleterious brain effects as mTBI.
