Matching Astrocytic and Neuronal Metabolism for Brain Function

Year: 2023
Type: article
Abstract: The metabolic footprint of astrocytes is key in supporting neuronal function and survival. The differential regulation of Pfkfb3 coordinates the glycolytic nature of astrocytes and the oxidative nature of neurons (1). Glycolytic-derived metabolites that are shuttled from astrocytes to neurons sustain this metabolic cooperation to facilitate neuronal neurotransmission. The mitochondrial respiratory chain is highly assembled in neurons to sustain high energy efficiency, whereas it is more disassembled in astrocytes to sustain high mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mROS) production (2). These naturally highly abundant mROS in astrocytes support a transcriptional signature that contributes to the highly active glucose metabolism in these cells that is necessary to sustain brain metabolism and behavior (3). This presentation will sum up these findings (4) and will show novel observations indicating additional key elements that are supportive of the astrocyte-neuronal metabolic coupling.
