Abstract: The practice of inscribing words onto metal or stone has had a long history in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia—a history that has always had complicated relationships with other sorts of textual production. In addition, the reading of these inscriptions has also had a history—at least as long as that of the inscriptions themselves. I stress this because I want to contend that the way scholars read and reproduced inscriptions is today neither self-evident nor timeless.
