Development and Validation of the COVID Beliefs Scale (CBS)

Abstract: COVID-19 produced a global health crisis, resulting in numerous individual behavioral adjustments to reduce risk of contagion. The Health Belief Model (HBM) suggests beliefs about a perceived health threat will predict health behavior. Understanding infection beliefs may therefore facilitate understanding response to illness threat. To probe infection beliefs, the COVID-19 Beliefs Scale (CBS) was developed and tested for validity, reliability, and factor structure in a sample of 442 adults residing within the United States (Study 1). Confirmatory factor analyses were then conducted to confirm the veracity of identified factor solutions in a national sample of U.S. adults (n = 3,285; Study 2). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of the final measure indicated a four-factor solution held in both samples. The measure was also found to have good internal consistency, reliability, and validity. Findings indicate the CBS is a valid assessment of multiple domains of COVID-19 beliefs.
